Principles of Fire Protection Engineering

Presented by Society of Fire Protection Engineers, join Bill Koffel and Christine Pongratz, P.E. of Jensen Hughes for the SFPE “Principles of Fire Protection Engineering” in-person seminar. The application of science and engineering principles to protect people, property, and their environments from harmful and destructive effects of fire and smoke will be discussed. Areas of fire detection, suppression, and mitigation as well as human behavior and recommendations on how to maintain a tenable environment for evacuation during a fire scenario will be covered. Fire suppression systems components will be examined to include fire science, fire safety design, fire detection and fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems, automatic sprinkler systems and smoke control principles. Industry standards and variations will be discussed using NFPA codes and building codes. Participants are eligible to earn 18 PDHs.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the phenomena of combustion and ignition.
• Forecast how buildings can be protected from fire and how human behavior respond can be expected during emergencies.
• Recognize means of egress concepts, human tenability limits, occupant responses to cues and decision-making process by people in fire situations and during evacuation.

Society of Fire Protection Engineers Symposium

Bill Koffel and other industry experts will come together in this forum to share their knowledge and best practices so fire protection engineers, designers, manufacturers, facility owners and managers, and first responders can have confidence that a fire event will be managed properly by applied fire protection systems and fire service response. The speakers will also discuss controversial topics on the newer editions of the prescriptive codes related to storage as well as the challenges from the fire service perspective, and the final suppression and extinguishment approaches. On Day 2 participants will have the opportunity to see a large-scale fire test that will take place at the Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. followed by discussions on changes and challenges associated with installing fire protection systems in such facilities and the challenges associated with fire alarm systems. The Center for Health Design Icons and Innovators Webinar Series

Presented by The Center for Health Design, join Bill Koffel for “How to Resolve “Design vs. Life Safety Code” Conflicts in Behavioral Health Facilities”.

In this 1-hour interactive webinar session, participants who have been involved in planning or designing behavioral health units will have the opportunity to identify conflicts that they may have encountered in those projects. During the second half of the program, Bill Koffel will focus on addressing them. Each will be discussed in detail by looking at current code requirements, changes in more recent editions of the applicable codes and equivalencies or alternative methods. As with other design considerations, involvement of all the stakeholders will be illustrated as a key factor in achieving an acceptable level of life safety while meeting the needs of the patients and clinical staff in a behavioral health environment. Participants are eligible to earn CEU’s upon completion of the webinar.

Learning Objectives:

• Identify locking arrangements permitted by the applicable codes that can be used in a behavioral health environment.
• Describe design considerations used in a behavioral health environment that do not create code conflicts but do require awareness of the applicable code provisions.

• Bill and other experts will provide a close look at an Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance (ITM) analysis, including how the data was collected through the compliance reporting platform, the methodology of the analysis, and the findings and recommendations for the ITM requirements and frequencies. The presenters will also compare the findings with the current requirements in NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, and NFPA 72®, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code®, and will discuss how ITM data can affect codes.

Join Bill Koffel and Joshua Brackett on March 23rd at 9:45AM (CST) for a one-hour presentation on “Commissioning and Transitioning Your Project to the Owner”. The occupancy of a new and renovated health care space triggers immediate regulatory and safety requirements including location of emergency shut-off valves, accurate inventory counts, preventive maintenance procedures for equipment, and updated and accurate life safety drawings. As an industry, there has been an increase in the inclusion of end-users in the design process. However, transitioning to operations is an area where increased collaboration with facilities can yield greater results and improved safety. This presentation will include experiences from the perspective of a facilities professional and a consultant. Specific successful and unsuccessful case studies will be presented. The presenters will use a “fireside chat” format to share their perspectives, to react to each other and engage with the attendees. The learning outcome for this session will be:

• Identify the stakeholders that should be involved in the commissioning process.
• Describe the benefit to including facility personnel in the transition process.
• List at least three actions that resulted in a positive transition to ownership.
• List at least three actions, or inactions, that resulted in a n unacceptable transition to ownership.

In this training you will advance your expertise with fire alarm and signaling system design and installation as Bill Koffel covers the changing role of traditional fire alarm systems and how to interpret and apply NFPA 72 correctly and efficiently. In addition to new technologies and major revisions in the Code, this activity-rich training will cover the latest requirements for circuits, including Class N circuits, and pathways; interconnected fire alarm control units; emergency control functions; initiating device identification, spacing, and placement; supervision station alarm systems; inspection and testing of equipment; and other topics. Upon completion of this high-impact interactive training you should be able to:

• Design a notification system for a given scenario
• List the options for secondary power supplies
• Plan the zoning and annunciation of an alarm system
• Perform a battery calculation
• Design a detection system for a given scenario
• Identify the appropriate initiating device for a given scenario and design an appropriate fire detection system for a given scenario
• Determine how loud a fire alarm must be for a given scenario
• Where visual signaling is required, determine the size and location of notification appliances for a given scenario

In this training Bill will provide instruction on the full range of topics of fire pump systems, major components and accessories, fire pump characteristics, electrical requirements, and acceptance testing of fire pump systems. This course provides the participant with information needed to understand the installation and application of fire pump systems.

NFPA 25, Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems (2020) Classroom Training

This training focuses on the role of the facility manager, the contractor, authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), and others. It is based on time-related activities rather than system activities, making it easier to understand when inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) must be completed. While focusing on facility manager responsibilities, the training is still relevant for contractors, building owners, fire and building officials, and other users of the standard. Upon completion of this 5-day training you should be able to:

• Identify different types of fire pumps and their characteristics
• Select an appropriate pump based on a given set of conditions
• Select an appropriate driver based on a given set of conditions
• Identify the most appropriate fire pump installation given a set of conditions
• Navigate NFPA 25 to recognize appropriate ITM of your water-based fire protection systems
• Recognize when specific ITM activities must be completed
• Recognize who will be conducting ITM of water-based fire protection systems with the use of the NFPA 25 standard and when
• Identify the significance of the results of the ITM of water-based fire protection systems

In this updated NFPA 13 course Bill Koffel will take participants through the design and analysis of a virtual manufacturing and warehousing facility where real-world decisions, standards use, and solutions will be investigated. Participants will be more confident and efficient in their designs, installations, and analysis through interactive instruction that engages participants in the full range of NFPA 13 application. Before the classroom training begins, an online pre-course imparts the base of knowledge you need to absorb more advanced learning. The 30-minute online pre-course will introduce NFPA codes and standards’ organization, NFPA 13's development process, effective document navigation for effective use, official NFPA global definitions, NFPA 13's scope and application, and each chapter's organizational structure. A Look at the 2024 Code Cycle and Proposals

Presented by the Firestop Contractors International Association, join Bill Koffel on November 4th at 11:00 AM (EST) as he presents “A Look at the 2024 Code Cycle and Proposals”. The International Building Code (IBC) and International Fire Code (IFC) are part of the International Code Council’s (ICC) Family of Codes. The 2024 IBC and IFC Code Development Processes finish with the ICC Board of Directors approval, with publications 6-12 months after the ICC Board weighs in. Getting a code proposal drafted, submitted, and passed is a long and detailed process, but one that FCIA has navigated successfully. In this one-hour session Bill will provide an overview of how the FCIA, as well as the firestop and fire-resistance industry, code proposals fared for the 2024 International Building and Fire Codes. Bill will also dive into the NFPA l1, NFPA 101/5000 standards development processes, with a focus on existing buildings and FCIA Member involvement.

Water-Based Systems Designer Workshop and Water Supply Analysis and Hydraulic Calculations

Presented by the National Fire Protection Association, join Bill Koffel as he teaches a virtual 5-day course on the 2019 Edition of NFPA 13. This workshop will help prepare designers by providing additional real-world examples in which various water-based codes and standards need to be understood and applied. This training will use activities to provide steps on water supply analysis and completing hydraulic calculations. Included in the hydraulic calculations review is a line-by-line walkthrough of a sample hydraulic calculation worksheet. Upon completion of this course you should be able to:

• Analyze existing system layouts for code and compliance precision
• Design and analyze a simple to complex water-based system
• Perform hydraulic calculations for designing and evaluating a water-based system

Application of Fire Risk Assessment

Presented by The Society of Fire Protection Engineers, join Bill Koffel as he presents this four-session seminar derived from SFPE’s 2-day in-person course. Following a brief overview of the Guide, participants will be divided into working groups which will be tasked with applying the SFPE Guide to a specific project. Groups will be able to choose from a selection of projects that include: historic building, a high-rise residential occupancy, or a petroleum industry facility. In addition to applying the Guide to their specific project, participants will also review the work of others groups to broaden their understanding of the concepts of a fire risk assessment. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion upon completing a written exam and receiving a passing score of 70%. Upon Completion of the course each participant qualifies for 15 PDHs or 1.5 CEUs. A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the various steps associated with a fire risk assessment, as outlined in the SFPE Engineering Guide to Fire Risk Assessment.
• Evaluate a project, prepare representative goal statements, objective statements, boundary conditions, and assumptions.
• Prepare a fire hazard assessment for a designed project.
• Identify a minimum of eight fire scenarios that need to be included in the fire risk assessment.
• Identify the data needs and potential sources of the data needed.

August 10th at 3:15 PM (EST), Bill Koffel will be co-presenting “ICC Committee on Health Care Update”. Over the last three years, the International Code Council’s Ad Hoc Committee on Healthcare has made significant progress in aligning the I-Codes with current federal regulations, taking the next step toward consistency in building codes for health care facilities. In this session Bill Koffel and Henry Kosarzycki of Flad Architects will outline the significant changes coming, fall of 2021, to the International Building Code, which applies to new facilities and the International Fire Code, which affects ongoing inspections of existing facilities.

This one-hour session will enable attendees to:

• Characterize the upcoming proposals to the I-Codes.
• Demonstrate why it is important for the I-Codes to be aligned with other health care codes and standards.

Presented by SFPE, join Bill Koffel as he presents “Application of Fire Risk Assessment”. This virtual seminar is derived from SFPE’s two-day course on Applications of Fire Risk Assessment and will provide participants with an overview of the Guide before participants will be divided into groups to apply the SFPE Guide to a specific project. Groups will be able to choose from a selection of projects that include: historic building, a high-rise residential occupancy, or a petroleum industry facility. In addition to applying the Guide to their specific project, participants will also review the work of other groups to broaden their understanding of the concepts of a fire risk assessment. Participants are eligible to earn 15 PDH/1.5 CEU

Learning objectives:

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

• Describe the various steps associated with a fire risk assessment, as outlined in the SFPE Engineering Guide to Fire Risk Assessment.
• Evaluate a project, prepare representative goal statements, objective statements, boundary conditions, and assumptions.
• Prepare a fire hazard assessment for a designed project.
• Identify a minimum of eight fire scenarios that need to be included in the fire risk assessment
• Evaluate various tools and methods available to assist in preparing a fire risk assessment and determine the appropriate one to be used for a given project.
